Motorola’s Super Bowl Ad Thinks Different, Paints Apple As 1984 Enemy

2011
The Advertising industry’s event of the year is this Sunday, and Motorola is already showing its hand in advance of the Super Ad Bowl. In a nod to Apple’s iconic 1984 commercial introducing the Macintosh personal computer, Motorola’s ad opens with an image of Earth wearing iPod headphones, a graphic of 2011 counting back to 1984, and, finally, the words “2011 looks a lot like 1984.” Clearly, Motorola is calling Apple out on its own ideology.
Motorola names specs in the ad such as a 1 GHz dual core processor and Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), but doesn’t mention the name of a specific product until the final frame when a logo for the Xoom tablet appears. Motorola and Verizon’s “Droid does” commercials certainly helped boost the brand recognition of Android– will this ad do the same for Motorola?
Check out Motorola’s ad below and let us know what you think. To jog your memory, we’ve also included the original “1984″ commercial.
