Beth Santos of Step Up OLPC reports that:

As many of you know, STEP UP OLPC has been going great and we couldn’t be more proud of the teachers and students in our program. Lately, however, we have been having problems with chargers and need to get some new ones that won’t break so easily during power surges.

Heeding her call, a wonderful organization called VOICES will be holding a fundraiser exclusively for Step Up OLPC, featuring live hip hop music, food and a presentation about OLPC in São Tomé e Príncipe.

It’s not often we give a notebook 5 out of 5 stars; the last time was about six years ago. However, after testing the newest Alienware M17x, we felt it deserved this rare honor.

It wouldn’t surprise us if Alienware were to ship the new M17x with a kitchen sink. After all, this awesome 17-inch gaming system has everything else. We’re talking the latest Intel second-gen “Sandy Bridge” Core processor, a 256GB Samsung SSD, 8GB of RAM, and an AMD Radeon 6970 GPU with 2GB of DDR5 memory. As if that’s not enough, this notebook comes with a Vizio wirelessHD transmitter built in, so if the M17x’ 17-inch, 1920 x 1080 screen isn’t big enough for you, you can output it wirelessly to an HDTV.

There was nothing this beast couldn’t handle: we saw double and triple the performance on just about every test we threw at it. Of course, the M17x also comes with Alienware’s cool customizable backlighting, a soft-touch lid and deck, and a spacious keyboard and touchpad.

The 21st century brought a new type of man: the one running out of time and space. As we can notice, the new man has developed a strong relationship with his gadgets and on the top of the list is the indispensable PC.

This friend we communicate with has instead of eyes a window called monitor which has a screen to make the eye-contact possible. Well, when we chose such gadget friend we should be warned that we might face some problems. Beside the fact, our machine-friend might be rather expensive, his window might be a truly burden as well. We cannot bring home a friend that consumes our space. So let’s talk about size, not any kind of size but the monitor screen size.

As you are searching for the perfect fit, you should know that the screen is a little bit tricky. It usually shows us a fake dimension. For example, if you have an older monitor using cathode tub, you will surely observe that the screen seems larger than it really is, because of monitor’s bulky frames. In contrast if you will have a flat screen (Liquid Crystal Display), it will surely seem smaller than its actually size. If you are about to purchase a new monitor screen, then there are few easy steps you should keep in mind when measure its dimensions.

Diagonal dimension
First of all, you should know when you have to determine the correct size of a monitor that of great importance are not the large frames you see around the screen, but the viewable area. Considering the borders you will get an unrealistic measure, for instance if the viewable area has 15 inch and you think that the plastic frames may count too, you will see that your measure grows and there is a distortion of 2 inch or more.

The second step is choosing a tape measure. Try not to use a metallic one; otherwise you risk scratching the surface of your screen. You could use a cloth tape, but ensure before using it, that it has at least one foot. In case you just don’t have a tape measure you may as well use a string. The third step and the most important though is the way you actually measure the screen. Measuring side-to-side or worst from the top to the bottom, you will get some wrong dimensions with no relevance, because after being manufactured the screens are diagonally measured.

As a result you should use the same method. Just place one end of the tape measure on the lowest point on the viewable area and then stretch it to the opposite corner. To be sure about your measurement, do it one more time and write down your result. If you used a string and you did not have any dimension to write down do not panic! Cut the string when it reaches the two opposite corners and after that measure the string when a tape measure comes in hand.

A computer monitor is a device used to show computer generated dara. The paternity of the first computer monitor is attributed to the American inventor Allen B. DuMont in 1930. Since the 1930s, computer monitors or visual display units have come a long way. Computer monitors are basically of two types: CRT (cathode ray tube) used in the early years and LCD (liquid crystal display) used in more recent years.

When choosing a monitor for the computer, one needs to take into consideration the monitor performance related issues, such as: luminance, aspect ratio, display resolution, contrast ratio, response time, and power consumption. Possibly the main issue is to decide whether we want to go for a CRT monitor or an LCD? Decidedly, for the past few years, there seems to be an increasing preference of users for LCD monitors. So let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of having on type or the other.

The CRT monitor’s most important advantage is its price. Look hard enough and you might find a big screen CRT monitor cheaper than a small diagonal LCD. Also, the quality of image and colors in CRT monitors is unparalleled by LCD ones. Of course, there are some disadvantages to be considered with CRT monitors. Their biggest disadvantage is their size, which involves a significant weight. And let’s not forget that they use a lot of power and that during functioning they give out heat. LCD monitors have been around for a long time in laptop computers. But in more recent years they started to be used with PCs. The main advantage in the case of LCDs is their reduced dimension and lightweight. The flat screen allows for them to be easily put in any place, to be moved around effortlessly or even to be mounted on a wall.

Another good thing about LCDs is that they don’t put such a strain on the eyes of the user. The lower intensity of the liquid crystals combined with the constant display of pixels is not so tiresome for the eyes. So, used for longer periods of time, LCDs do not cause any harm to the user’s health. Some of the disadvantages of LCDs are: the high price, the fixed resolution. An LCD can only display the number of contained pixels. However, in a lower resolution, it can display images in one or two ways.

Last but not least, LCD technology can cause a double contour of the bright images on black background. The explanation for this is the following: although the response time for changing the crystals’ status from inactive to active is small, the reversed processes is four times longer and it tends to leave a faint mark on the screen. This is particularly evident when playing games or watching video recording where bright objects move on a dark background.

Bottom line: the choice of monitor should depend on the type of activity for which the computer is intended. CRTs are more useful for individual users who use the computer for word processing, graphic applications, and games or, simply, have a limited budget. LCDs are a more suitable choice for those using the computer for programming or have limited space available. One other aspect to be remembered is that computer monitors have a longer life span than computers themselves. So they can be used with a new computer, once the old one is rendered useless.

The Wife came up with error 5a when trying to print on our Brother mfc- 665cw today. This can be a critical problem but not necessarily so. Try these things before you take it for service:
1. Check for any paper jams:

Since the issue is usually a sensor issue a bad jam can mess up the lens, make sure it is clear.

2. Clear the print queue:

You should always clear the print queue when you have any kind of issue to make sure any tests are done in a clean environment.
3. Power down the machine:

Unplug and replug the device. Give it 10 seconds in between.
This might do the trick and save you a few bucks. Give it a shot first and see what happens.

We enter our fourth year of the OLPC Learning Club DC hopeful that the movement will remain strong for years to come, and we’ll do all we can to contribute to the momentum. One project we urge you to participate in is the olpcMAP Project We recommend you create an entry there for yourself or if you know of a deployment of OLPC XOs, however small.

On a larger note, one of the highly touted benefits of the OLPC XO laptop is the ability for it to save on the cost and complexity of shipping paper books to children in remote places by loading it with electronic.

At this month’s OLPC Learning Club DC, we’ll take a look at the activities on the XO that support reading ebooks and review James Simmons’ book on how to create ebooks for the XO and many other ereading devices.

Where there is internet connectivity available, XO laptops can also access the Internet Archive’s Open Library books using a web-based book viewer, which has recently been updated to support touch screen devices. Also, a variety of e-reader devices will be on display.
