Pocket computers are small sized models that can run a classic Windows operating system. They are so tinny you can keep them in your pocket and take them everywhere you need. There are many different manufacturers of such products on the market, and even the models themselves have various designs. Some of them look like a laptop in thumbnail while others are just like mobile phones. Nevertheless, what would be the fun in having this gadget if you cannot hook it up with a keyboard or even a classic monitor when you have the chance? And in fact, pocket computers offer you this option, through infrared communication.

Infrared waves
Infrared waves are the key of this connection between pocket computers and external devices. Their name comes from the special light that infrared devices emit, which is a low frequency one and also one of the lowest visible lights. On the colors’ spectrum, it is right beneath the red color, from here taking its name. If it helps you to better understand the phenomenon, you can make a comparison between modems and infrared devices. Modems work with sound variations and they work with infrared variations to carry data. Infrareds are extremely popular because they make a good job and they are not expensive at all, even though their performance is more reduced than the one of Bluetooth or Wi-Fi devices.

Pocket PCs and the infrared communication
As I said, is funny having a tinny computer at your service, but you might also feel the need to synchronize it with larger devices. The wireless protocol usage is extremely convenient, affordable, gets you rid of tangling wires and can be used almost everywhere. The keyboard manufacturers came with some really mind – blowing models so far. Some of them can be easily fold and placed in the pocket together with a Palm, while others are virtual keyboards projected on any plane surface, obviously through infrared. There are even special devices that can project both a keyboard and a monitor and since you already have your pocket computer, it looks like you do not need anything else at all.
Infrared keyboard
One of the most popular models is the Stowaway universal keyboard, which works wireless through IR. It only weighs seven ounces and it measures 2 x 8 x 9.5 inches. Working with two AAA batteries, this keyboard can easily support pocket PCs, Palms and even phones. You will find it very comfortable, on large size, with 18 mm between keys. Moreover, you will sure appreciate its feature of easily being fold. It will cost you 125 dollars. But Stowaway is a physical keyboard. However, there are virtual peripherals available as well. Light – projected models are really popular and they do make a fantastic impression when you use them. With a simple device connected at the pocket computer and a flat surface on your service, a keyboard drawn with red light will appear and you can start typing. If you need a larger display, you can always connect the little computer on a monitor that supports infrared communication.
