Swivels are simple devices, working by basic mechanical rules, which allow you to turn or rotate the position of an appliance or furniture. They are more commonly used for TVs and monitors. What makes them so necessary for monitors is the fact that they allow you to basically switch positions however you like and you need. Since many displays have not so great viewing angles, and most of them give you headaches if you are not staying right in front of them, being able to swivel them on even 360 degrees will be a real bless.

Computer monitor swivels
This little device is generally purchased for home or office usage. It is a simple platform sitting on the top of a table or desk, fully rotary. However, you might find models that can be used to fix an LCD monitor on a wall. Depending on what type of display you have and on the position you intend to place it, you might want to choose combinations of plastic and metal, both of high quality, so they can sustain the weight of the monitor. Coming back to the table swivels, they can also be made by plastic and metal, but most of them only have a large platform and no arm at all.

Options
The offer is so various that you must carefully analyze it. There are models appropriate for specific weights and that need to also fit with your furniture. A fixed bracket, specially designed to be fixed on the wall, is a solid option. But there are also tilts and swivels for wall usage. There are brackets in two pieces. There are rack mounts. And the list can go on and on. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a reliable manufacturer, with good quality products, check the UMM series from Bosch. They have some really great devices for LCD monitors swiveling.

The C-Clamp arm
This swivel sure has a catchy look. Stylish, elegant and even ergonomic, it perfectly goes with an LCD monitor. The arm will allow you to tilt the display in various angles at ease. It has no complicated instructions for when you decide to install or dismount it. Your monitor’s safety was very important for the producers, so an alloy between aluminum and some strong metals is the foundation of this model. It has a compact design, to help you save as much space as possible and you can choose from three different but quick ways to use it: spring arm, pivot stand or simple swivel.

Once installed, on pivot you can rotate the display at 360 degrees, on swivel at 270 degrees and you can tilt it at only 40 degrees. It supports a maximum weight of 15 kilos. However, the C-Clip is most commonly used for table fixture, with the mention that the table should have between 20 and 60 m/m. And do not be worried that it could damage your furniture, the system is protective enough to keep that from happening.

Bosch offer
As I have previously suggested, Bosch is yet another option to consider. If you get the chance, look for the LW 30B model, which is a wall bracket supporting up to 12 kilos of weight.

We’re down to the final match of the second round! It’s the LG Optimus 2x versus the HTC Evo Shift 4G – Which will go on to face the HTC Thunderbolt, the only other remaining Android phone in this year’s contest? This game will remain open until midnight on Sunday, March 27.

First announced in December, the LG Optimus 2x was the first smart phone launched with Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor inside, promising blazing dual-core performance along with 1080p video recording and playback. This 4-inch handset is rolling out in Europe now, but there are reports that it will land in the U.S. soon under a different name: T-Mobile G2X. The device features an HDMI port for outputting 1080p video (and anything else on the phone’s screen), 8GB of memory, and an 8-MP camera on the back and a 1.3-MP camera up front. Supposedly the Optimus 2X/G2X will be running Android 2.2 at launch, but an upgrade to Gingerbread won’t be far behind.

The HTC Evo Shift 4G–which earned 4 out of 5 stars when we reviewed it– is the smaller 3.6-inch brother to the 4.3-inch Evo 4G; it has a slower 800-MHz Qualcomm MSM7630 processor, 512MB of RAM, and 2GB of ROM. However, the Shift has a comfortable slide-out QWERTY keyboard, HTC’s Sense interface, and Sprint’s 4G connection speeds, which saw 6 Mbps on the download and consistently delivered 900 Kbps to 1 Mbps uploads. You can also use the Shift 4G as a mobile hotspot, and connect up to 8 devices.

Problem :

I recently bought a new computer with windows 7 (32 bit) Pro. I installed the drivers for my HP laserjet 5000n. The printer works fine, however, I do not see the printer in the in control panel (Devices and Printers). I have 2 other printers that I would like to remove. They can only be seen when I select a printer when printing a document.

Solution :

I’m assuming you are connected to the parallel port. Right click on the computer and see if there is a Printer Properties menu item.

I’ve seen this when the parallel port is configured in a Legacy mode so the parallel device is just another part of the computer device (reconfigure the parallel system BIOS).

If you have more than one printer defined that uses the same port and same driver Devices and printers conciders this one device and the other queues are configurable in fly out menus off the primary device.

If you have Pro or Ultimate you can use the UI from the spooler team, launch printmanagement.msc to manage local printers.

Texting while driving is certainly an extremely dangerous behavior, as is manipulating mobile phones in general during automobile operation. SuperTooth believes it has a safer alternative in the SuperTooth HD, a wireless speakerphone that allows drivers to chat and even tweet hands-free.

Announced in the lead-up to the CTIA 2011 trade show, the SuperTooth HD clips to car sun visors and pairs with common smart phones such as BlackBerrys, iPhones, and Android devices via Bluetooth wireless networking. Equipped with two 5-Watt speakers, a 5.4-Watt amp, and dual microphones, the device is designed to be loud yet sensitive to driver voice commands.

Besides using the SuperTooth HD as a standard speakerphone, the company claims the product can also update social media services such Twitter and FaceBook, along with email, and SMS texts just by speaking. Sounds pretty interesting since it could give some slick Microsoft Sync style to cars other than Fords.  Expect the SuperTooth HD to cost 9 and hit store shelves by April.

OLPC_New_02.jpg

With much hoopla, Pentagram has redesigned the One Laptop Per Child website, laptop.org for the third time, building on its first site launch in 2007 and an update in 2008. As Pentagram says:

Pentagram’s Lisa Strausfeld and her team have designed a new site for OLPC that helps focus on this new phase of the project: the use of the laptops and how they are helping to empower children. Previous versions of the OLPC site emphasized the organization’s mission and laptop technology. Now that the laptops are in use, the new site details the accomplishments of the program, helps create a sense of community and encourages continued support.

The site has an editorial focus and acts as a kind of OLPC “mother ship,” or hub, that serves to aggregate news and information about OLPC and surface the communities that have grown up around the program. The homepage shares stories and photos of children and classrooms that use the laptops. News updates are color-coded by source, and the site features an interactive map of the world that shows the countries and regions that have signed on to the initiative, with links to local updates via the OLPC Wiki. The site uses the language of simple graphic icons that Pentagram’s Michael Gericke developed for the organization’s identity. The new site was developed by Upstatement.

There is only one problem with the new site: its totally unusable.

  • Home Page: At one large image with only the faintest hint of navigation, users are quite confused as to what they’re looking at. Yes, its an image, but of what? And how to learn about what they’re looking at? Even long-time users web users (and those that know OLPC well) get confused. At first, I thought there was some kind of website error – like a too large image erroneously put into a “normal” site and wrecked formatting.
  • News Page: Dear god, this is design run amok. The green and blue bubbles and gray dates is nauseating. I can’t tell if I should hover or click or just run. And how does the reader know when changes happen? You’d have to be a master at pattern recognition to know new news is up.
  • Map Page: Thanks for the dots, but this tiny representation makes OLPC seem no where – the locations are lost in the gray dots. What’s so much better is olpcMAP, not that OLPC would ever recognize a community-developed anything.
  • Community Page: And this proves the point that OLPC doesn’t care about community. Thanks for listing different links (even OLPC News, if oddly, as the only site w/o caps) but the way they’re displayed is again, design over practicality. Why horizontal, paragraph-esque list, when the full weight of human patterns would suggest vertical lists under headers?
  • Take Action: The only page that doesn’t suck.
  • Sign Up: I don’t have an issue with the sign up page design, but I do have an issue with its action. Just when might OLPC actually use this email list? I signed up ages ago, and have received exactly 3 or 4 emails over the last 5 years. Not much good to have an email list that’s never used.

So kudos to OLPC for redesigning their site (though I really didn’t see the need) yet how badly the execution. And wait, they didn’t even incorporate what is the only decent aspect of their web presence these days: the OLPC blog!

Question Details: Recently, I’ve found that if you complain to companies that their products are faulty in someway not even necessarily having to prove it – they send vouchers through the post! I got £30 off the bank the other day, purely because I didn’t like their change of address protocols and couldn’t get through to their complaints department to tell them about it – £30 no less!!

Then I realised it’s because they’re being monitored by regulatory bodies and in the case of retail companies if you complain about a tin of cat food falling out of some packaging onto your toe or something equally trivial, they’ll send you vouchers through the post to shut you up in case you might sue and it’s beginning to mount up – I wouldn’t say its an income, but I can see its got potential – has anyone else out there had similar experiences and come to the same conclusion?

I wish to ‘hone’ my skills in this area – has anyone got any tips or suggestions, to scale new financial heights of glory?
All the complaints that I’ve made have been VALID, but at the same time trivial compared with other problems in life, but because they WERE valid, this is probably why I got the recompense; because not only are they being monitored by the various regulatory bodies that exist, but for the reason as I’ve actually been told repeatedly – they do value the feedback when there is a flaw, because it helps them improve their products or service and sometimes they sound genuine when they say this, although I appreciate that maybe some of the time they just want to keep the peace.

But since apathy is rife in modern society today, regardless of what I might receive for my trouble – shouldn’t I complain if something is faulty or a service is found wanting?
